Hack 3 | Internet

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) offers a National Broadband Map that allows you to type in your address and see available internet providers for your specific address. You can use this to see which provider has the best service in your area.

If you have multiple ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in your location, you can use that as leverage to get a better deal on your current internet service or, if needed, switch to a better one.

I was able to call my Internet Provider and see what specials they have for my current service. They were able to offer me a “customer loyalty credit” of $35/month which equates to a savings of $420/year.

You can also look at options to purchase a Modem and Router instead of continuing to rent. It cost me ~$100 for each refurbished, and they paid themselves off within 6 months. The Modem rental was $20/month and Router rental was $13.95/month. This ended up saving me $200 the first year and $400 every year after that.

Make sure to call your Internet Provider and confirm which models they recommend that work best for your given provider. I opted for the following:

Modem: Arris Surfboard S33

Router: Eero Mesh Wifi 6 Router

You can then use a credit card that offers 5% cashback on your internet bill for even more savings.
